PL Number stands for Price List Number
Object: To recognize the material distinctly
Applicable for All Stock items (Not for Non-Stock Items)
Unified PL - Common for all Zonal Railways & Production Units
Codification - 3 types. Fully Significant, Semi-Significant, and Non Significant
Fully Significant - All digits signify some property of the material - To adopt it, requires a large number of digits which may not be manageable.
Semi-Significant - The first group signifies the property of the material and the Second group has no significance - Indian Railways Follows it - 8 Digits
Non-Significant - All digits have no significance.
MODULAS 11 - To find the Check Digit of PL Number 25161040
In case the remainder is two digits, the rightmost digit is the Check Digit.
Above example, If the last digit ‘0’ is correct, the computer will accept it, otherwise, it is rejected.
Modulus 11 - adopted to check the digit of the PF number - Provident Fund number too.
